Soft Molasses Cookies

  Cream shortening and sugar together, add molasses and beat well. Sift dry ingredients together into bowl and add alternately with sour milk to the first mixture. Roll out dough 3/8" thick and cut with cookie cutter. Bake at 350° F. approximately 15 minutes. Ice when cool. 

Icing: add milk gradually.

Yields 5 dozen.

1½ cups shortening
1½ cups sugar
1½ cups molasses
1½ cups sour milk or buttermilk
9 cups flour
4½ teaspoons baking soda
3 teaspoons ginger
3 teaspoons cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon cloves
3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1½ teaspoon salt
Icing:
6½ cups powdered sugar
1 cup Crisco
1/2 cup milk (or desired amount)
1½ teaspoon vanilla
pinch of salt
