Apple Dumplings
To make
pastry, sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Cut in shortening
until particles are about the size of small peas. Sprinkle milk over
mixture and press together lightly, working dough only enough to hold
together. Roll pastry in one large rectangular piece, 1/4 " thick.
Spread with 1/2 stick melted butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1 teaspoon
cinnamon. Add chopped apples and roll like a jelly roll; cut in slices
1¼" thick. Place in greased 9" x 13" x 2" pan. Cook
sauce over low heat for 10 minutes. Cover dumplings with sauce. Bake at
375° F for 35-40 minutes. Serve warm with milk or ice cream.

2 cups flour
2½ teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup shortening
2/3 cup milk
Sauce:
2 cups brown sugar
2 cups water
1/4 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
