- Dip fruit slices in pure lemon juice to keep them from becoming brown.
- When celery or lettuce loses its crispness, place it in a pan of cold water with raw potato in it. After awhile it will be crisp again.
- Slip your hands inside a waxed sandwich bag and you have a perfect mitt for greasing your baking pans and casserole dishes.
- Yogurt may be used in place of sour cream and has much less calories.
- Add a little vinegar to stockpot of water before setting jars in to seal. This helps keep you jars from water stain buildup.
- Add a lump of butter to the water when cooking potatoes and they will not boil over.
- When baking poultry and game, you will have juicier meat and less shrinkage if you use a constant low temperature.
- Before heating milk in a saucepan, rinse the pan with water and it will not scorch so quickly.
- To keep your cookbook pages from getting soiled when in use, slide into a plastic bag.
- If a lemon is put in hot water for a few minutes, it will yield more juice.
- To cut a fresh cake, use a thin, sharp knife, dipped in water.
- Before measuring honey or syrup, oil the cup with cooking oil and rinse in hot water.
- A little salt sprinkled into a frying pan will prevent splattering.
- Muffins will slide right out of tin pans if set on a wet towel first.
- Bring water to boil before adding vegetables. This helps preserve the vegetables vitamins.
- To remove fat from soups, stews or sloppy Joes; when finished add a lettuce leaf to the pot. It will absorb the fat. Remove before serving.
- When you're frying bacon, sprinkle a little sugar in the skillet. The bacon won't stick to the pan.
- Mix a little salt to flour when making a thickening and it won't get lumpy.
- When making pan gravy add a bit of instant coffee granules for extra flavor and color.
- Before baking pies, brush the top with milk and sprinkle with sugar. Leaves a nice, brown, crusty top.
- Brush the inside of the bottom pie crust with beaten egg whites before baking. Prevents sogging.
- Before pouring cake batter into pan. Grease pan with vegetable oil. Then coat with sugar which prevents sticking.
- Add several drops of vinegar to icing while beating and it will be soft and seldom grainy.
