Binoculars for Bird Watching

Bring yourself closer to the action with a good pair of binoculars. Whether you are watching in your backyard or out in the field, your birding experience will be greatly enhanced with a close-up look.

What to look for: Birdwatchers prefer binoculars that are relatively lightweight, and are easy to hand-hold for long periods of time. They should produce bright images, have nice eye relief and have good close focus capabilities.  Look for 8X-10X, at least 42mm of aperture, and close focus under 10 feet.

Glossary of terms:

Magnification: This is the magnifying power of the binoculars. A magnification of factor 7 for example produces an image as if it were 7 times closer to the object. Hand-held binoculars have lower magnification so they will be less susceptible to shaking.

Aperture (Objective diameter): The diameter of the objective lens determines the amount of light that can be gathered to form an image. Usually expressed in millimeters.

Field of View: This is determined by the optical design of the binoculars and is usually expressed in a linear value, such as how many feet (meters) in width will be seen at 1,000 yards. or an angular value of how many degrees.

Eye Relief: This is the distance from the rear eyepiece lens to wheree the image is formed. Eye relief determines where the observer must position their eye behind the eyepiece in order to see an unvignetted image and is important for eyeglass wearers who require a longer eye relief. Binoculars may have an eye relief ranging from a few millimeters to 2.5 centimeters or more.
